Careers Information for Staff
Careers education is something that every member of staff should be aware of and contribute to. Government guidelines for careers education include the Gatsby Benchmarks that set out what excellent careers guidance and education should look like.
The eight Gatsby Benchmarks are:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
Within faculties and subject areas, staff can get involved in a range of ways:
- Nominate a Careers Ambassador who is responsible for overseeing careers within the faculty
- Discuss career options with pupils, what jobs could your subject lead to?
- Discuss post 16 options with pupils
- Be actively involved with any school initiatives during National Careers Week
- Display information about apprenticeship opportunities for your subject
- Invite a speaker or employer to come and talk to pupils about your subject
- Arrange a visit to a workplace
- Plan a careers based topic / unit of work and engage with employers to help and support this
