St James’ Catholic High School believes that the setting and completion of high quality homework makes a vital contribution to the progress of all students.

Homework will:

  • Enrich the curriculum whilst promoting independent learning
  • Consolidate and extend work or prepare for new learning activities
  • Provide relevant and regular opportunities to develop examination skills and techniques
  • Provide opportunities to revise and re-visit material covered in class

Expectations:

  • KS3 – 30 mins per subject per week
  • KS4 – 45 mins per subject per week

All students are expected to complete homework as per the homework timetable. In addition, it is expected that students should review their learning on a regular basis.

All homework is set on Satchel One, which shows the homework set by each subject and teacher, full details and resources for the task set and the date that the task is due.

St James’ embraces the policy of inclusion. Where pupils have statements of special educational needs, due regard will be paid to the recommendations therein. There may be situations where homework may need to be modified accordingly to suit the individual concerned. This would be done in consultation with the SENCO, Director of Faculty and class teacher.

For children who are on the SEN register for emotional and/or behavioural reasons the school will employ a differentiated homework policy where necessary.

The class teacher liaises with the SENCO where appropriate. In turn the SENCO liaises with external agencies, as necessary, to support and guide the progress of each child. The school may, for example, discuss the needs of a child with the education social worker or LA behaviour support service.
