Hello everyone! We hope you had a fantastic half term holiday and enjoyed the long- awaited good weather that we were blessed with.
Books of the Month
Hugo Pepper by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. This award winning author has a number of books to his name full of fabulous characters. In this story Hugo Pepper goes on a voyage from the land of the snow giants which is wonderfully illustrated by Chris Riddell . Described as ‘ as magical as a mermaid on a bicycle’!
The other book we have on offer this month is Black Flamingo by Dean Atta. A book for older readers, it tells the story about Michael who is on a journey of bravery to get where he has and he is now ready to show himself to the world in bold colours. Described as ‘bold’ and a ‘powerful coming of age story’. It too has already won awards.
The Awesome Book Award 2021
This award is chosen by 7 – 10 year olds from a selection of nominated books and this years worthy winner is Malamander by Thomas Taylor. The story contains a spooky hotel, a spookier old lady and missing parents and has been described as “full of the most wonderful things”. This is Thomas’ debut story book and he has even illustrated it himself. The short list for next year’s award will be launched in September 2021

A big thank you to Ms Condron’s sister who, after having a big sort out, has donated lots of books to the library. There are lots of new titles to add to the Young Adult section ( Year 10s and Year 11s), some classics and lots of general fiction for everyone to enjoy. Come and have a look and see if you can find something great to read for the half term holiday.
Recently bought books
Some students often tell me how much they have enjoyed a particular book and are keen to see if there is a sequel. So I did a bit of digging at local book shops and now you can now enjoy the following series…
Helena Duggan – A Place called Perfect, The Trouble with Perfect , The Battle for Perfect
This series tells the mysterious tales of a town called Perfect – full of magic, mystery and heart in your mouth adventure.
Sophie Cleverly – The Scarlet and Ivy series.
There are six books to enjoy in this series about twin sisters Scarlet and Ivy and their adventures in Rockwood School. Lots of mysterious and spooky goings on!
Rick Riordan – Percy Jackson series
There are a number of titles in this popular series of myth and modern, ideal for Year 8 students who have started to study Greek Mythology this term. Percy Jackson is an ordinary school boy who now spends his time battling monsters and generally trying to stay alive! A fun alternative when school work gets a bit heavy ….
Book Buzz 2021
As previously mentioned we are delighted to be involved with the Book Buzz initiative again for Year 7 pupils and hopefully, all things being well, we can really go big with this in the new term in September. The Book Trust have just announced the titles on offer and there is a fantastic selection of book ranging from non-fiction, mystery, ghost stories, books to make you laugh and stories to give you something to think about ….in fact something for everyone.
We will be keeping you up to date with all things Book Buzz so watch this space!
Mr Men – new characters
To celebrate 50 years of Mr Men two new character voted for by the public are Little Miss Brave and Mr Calm..……. perfect for these challenging times. The new characters will have their own books in September
The Railway Children
A sequel to E E Nesbit’s The Railway Children is currently being filmed starring Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtney along with a new cast of children. It is due for release In April 2022 and no doubt will be as fabulous and emotional as the first one
Book Awards
Winner of the Children’s Illustrated and Non-Fiction Book Award is David Olusoga with his book ‘Black and British: a short essential history’. This is a children’s version of his highly acclaimed adult book and David says that this book ‘puts black people back into the story of Britain….back into history’
